Ten

I was still trying to figure out how Neve’s musky leather scent could be stuck in my nose when my phone rang in my office. “Hello?”

“Hey, it’s Cy. I just got a call from someone from Newsweek, and apparently our story has already leaked out.”

“Fuck. Are you serious? How the hell did that happen?”

“It’s probably going to be impossible to trace it to any one person, unfortunately.” He didn’t sound nearly as optimistic as he did in the board room this morning. “They want to meet with us.”

“They do?” My ears perked up, my mind already spinning with strategies. I guessed my earlier thoughts about potentially contacting the media first and going on the offensive were no longer relevant.

“They said they can have someone on Great Exuma by tomorrow morning to meet with you—if you don’t mind being the one to handle it.”

“That’s what you pay me for,” I reminded him. “You don’t want them in the park?”

“If you meet and it goes well, you can bring them back to the park, but I just want to make sure it’s a legit thing. I’m a little wary of letting just anyone in at the moment. I trust your judgment, though.”

“I understand your reticence. So what time tomorrow?” I confirmed.

“Eleven? An early lunch at this place Jolie and I like, if that’s okay. I wanted to check with you first before making firm arrangements,” he explained.

A little laugh escaped my mouth. “It’s my job, Cy. Whatever you need. I want to make sure things go smoothly just as badly as you do.”

“I know.” I heard him sigh. “I appreciate all you do, Enya.”

“It’s my pleasure.”

“Oh, one more thing,” he said.

“What’s that?”

“Don’t go alone. Ask someone from security to go with you, okay? I’d feel better if I knew you were with someone else.”

“Okayyyy...” I drew out the word as I figured out how I wanted to convey my reservations. “It’s broad daylight, though...and I’m assuming Captain Fred will be transporting me to the island?”

“Yes, but he has to bring some folks back. He won’t be able to return to you until later in the afternoon. So you’ll have to stall them for a while if they want to come back to the park. I trust you’ll be able to handle it; I just want someone along for your safety. Just in case.”

“Alright. I’ll go down to the security office and see who is available.”

“Great. Thanks again, Enya.”

I hung up and glanced around my office, looking for my sweater. It was breezy today, and I feared a storm was rolling in. I should probably find my umbrella too, I considered as I rolled the conversation I’d just had with my boss around in my head, as I had a tendency to do. Today’s recorded phrase was I’m a little wary of letting just anyone in at the moment. It kept repeating in my head again and again.

I found my umbrella and set off to the security office. Main Street looked relatively deserted except for some workers still cleaning up the mess from the previous night’s party.
